Hello! [personal profile] azurelunatic's given me permission to post this here, so I hope it's ok with all of you. I'm actually hoping for a favour: I'm writing a paper on Pottermore, which I'll be presenting at the Magic is Might conference in July. I'm specifically looking at Pottermore and participatory culture and was hoping to conduct some email interviews with Harry Potter fans who are also on Pottermore. I thought I'd give you a bit of information about my research and how the interviews will be conducted, and if anyone is interested in taking part you could PM me to let me know. Thanks in advance!

About the project
In June 2011, a website appeared containing J.K. Rowling’s signature and the words ‘Pottermore: Coming Soon.’ As new details came to light, Pottermore was revealed to be a free, collaborative website in which fans would be able to find extra-textual information on characters and places, upload artwork, be sorted into houses, buy ebooks and connect with the series on a much more interactive level. Yet not everyone is convinced of the benefits the site may have.

The purpose of the study is to examine the role that Pottermore might play in shaping canon, fans’ relationships with the text, and participatory culture itself. This paper seeks to examine the impact that Pottermore may have on Harry Potter fandom by addressing existing notions of what participatory culture means, conducting an analysis of the site’s content and questioning fans on their fan activities on and outside of Pottermore. The interview questions will concentrate on your involvement in the Harry Potter fandom and your experience of Pottermore. The interview will take place via email and will comprise of approximately ten main questions, with the potential for further questions to be asked based on your initial answers.

Email responses to question will be stored in a password-protected folder on a password-protected computer belong to myself. Any hard copies or electronic copies on CD, external drive or USB stick will be stored in a locked filing cabinet in my home office. The data will be kept for five years on completion of the project (estimated to be by July 2012).

Participation in this research project is voluntary. You may decline to answer any of the questions and you may withdraw at any time during the data collection period. No physical or psychological risks are anticipated as a result of participating in this project.

Your name and any identifying information will be held confidential, except when legislation or a professional code of conduct requires that the information you provide be reported. Your identity will only be known to myself, unless you consent for your name to be used to refer to you and attribute direct quotes in all conference papers and publications based on this research. You may chose a pseudonym at any time during the data collection process should you prefer for your identity to be withheld. Keep in mind that full anonymity cannot be guaranteed. It is possible that friends, acquaintances or members of the same fan community who read a publication or attend a conference presentation could identify you based on contextual information.

If you have any questions regarding this study, or would like additional information to assist you in reaching a decision about taking part in the interview, please contact me by PM.

A little while ago there was a request for feedback on the concept for the community, but I failed to do the most obvious thing: make a poll!

General Concept

Make [community profile] harrypotter a general discussion/info/meta/announcement community that allowed for cross-community promotion and event promotion. [community profile] harrypotter would be a 'bulletin board' for HP fans on DW.

A Sticky Directory of HP on DW

At the top of the community would be a sticky post with a 'Master List' of all communities on DW for HP. It would be organized similarly to this DW F/F Links List on [community profile] girlgay.

Non-replication of Existing Communities

I don't see any need for this community to replicate what other communities on DW do. There's already a community for general fanworks ([community profile] hp_fanfiction), and there's one for fanart ([community profile] hp_fanart), and there's all kind of little ones for things like ships and slash and femmeslash, and even [community profile] hp_add_me for things like finding other Harry Potter fans. As a result, the tagging system would be more general.

Tags

There could be tags for fanfiction, fanart, discussion, and promo, but not deeply extensive shipping and character ones like at [community profile] hp_fanfiction. Tags might look like the following: media: fiction; media: art; event: exchange; event: fest; event: friending meme

Cross-community Promotion

Like [community profile] fandom_on_dw, we could have two templates for posting/advertising:
1) a template for a new DW community that's HP-related
2) a template for an HP event/exchange

Communities would have to be on DW. If you have a community dedicated to Minvera's Hats on LJ, you couldn't advertise it here, because, hey, we're all on DW and not on LJ.

HOWEVER, if you were running a fest dedicated to Minerva's Hats on your Minerva's Hats community, you could advertise it, because a one-shot event is something that's relatively easy to participate in across journaling platforms.

If there was demand for it, we could also have a post, which was linked in the master sticky-list, where non-DW general HP communities could advertise.

We're halfway through December already; can you believe it?!

Some absolutely amazing fic and art has been posted to Kinky Kristmas so far. Sadly, reading/viewing/commenting already seems to be dropping off a bit this year. However! A roundup of the pieces posted during the first two weeks is here below the cut for your catching-up convenience. :D

Do yourselves and the fantastic authors and artists a favor -- set aside some reading/viewing time soon. And once you're caught up, be sure to keep watching; some of the very best stuff has yet to be posted!

For Harry Potter fans interested in the ebooks, Pottermore is running a survey asking for things like likelyhood of purchase, where you buy your ebooks, what devices you own, and what would make you not buy (I put down 'the presence of DRM').

If you're interested in giving some feedback, here's a link to the Pottermore blog post:

The Aurors Prompt-Fest is open for signups and prompts!!

Are you fan of cop dramas on TV? Is Mad-Eye Moody one of your favorite Harry Potter characters? Ever wish the series had chucked Quidditch in favor of more Defense Against the Dark Arts?

Then you would like The Aurors, the TV show that, alas, never existed. Except here, in fanfic form! This is a prompt meme inspired by that fan "trailer," for readers and writers who would love to see a grittier, more adult Harry Potter, focused on the men and women (and possibly some non-humans, too) who defend both the wizarding and Muggle worlds against evil magic.

Signups are open now; close on December 8th at 8 p.m. EST; stories are due by the same time on January 8th, and will be opened for reading on the 9th. They'll be anonymous to begin with; author reveal will follow a week later.

    Hi [community profile] harrypotter community!

I'm one of the co-admins for this community. I know that this is one of the oldest Harry Potter communities on Dreamwidth, and I'd like to see it become a neat community for HP fans. :)

I wanted to ask you for feedback about the shape of this community, and what you think it should do. I cobbled together a loose concept, based on comments from the post on late October.

    Existing HP Communities on DW
DW will probably always be smaller than LJ, so I don't see any need for this community to replicate what other communities on DW do.

There's already a community for general fanworks ([community profile] hp_fanfiction), and there's one for fanart ([community profile] hp_fanart), and there's all kind of little ones for things like ships and slash and femmeslash, and even [community profile] hp_add_me for things like finding other harry potter fans.

    Directory of HP on DW
What DW doesn't have is a directory of all the HP-focused communities and fests/exchanges on DW, nor a space to do targeted HP community/event promotion, nor discuss HP things in general, nor run friending memes and the like.

My broad concept for the community would be something with a giant stickied post with a 'Master List' of all communities on DW for HP (organization would be something that would need to be hashed out) at the top of the community.

Thoughts for how to organize it?

    Further thoughts )

    General Concept
So, the idea would be to have a general discussion/info/meta/'hey I did something cool' community, that also allowed for cross-community promotion and event promotion, where [community profile] harrypotter would be a 'bulletin board' for HP fans on DW, which I think would fit a community that's got as general a name as [community profile] harrypotter

Feedback, comments, suggestions, thoughts are all welcome! I'll probably let this post float for a week, and asking for feedback, before doing anything to specifically change the goals/purpose of the community. :)

[community profile] hp_prisonerfest: "An anonymous exchange for authors to write about Harry Potter characters in a prisoner style situation."

Sign-ups end today! The community will be mirrored on DW and LJ, but sign-ups are over on the LJ post.

Normally, I would not have made this post, and instead contacted the mod. Unfortunately, [personal profile] jen does not appear to have any public posts on their journal, and has Private Messaging turned off.

Does anyone know what this community was intended to do, or have any ideas for it?

As far as HP stuff on DW goes, there's got to be some kind of void in HP fandom that this community could fill.

As far as I know, there isn't a community dedicated to promoting HP communities, but I'm not sure people would want one. Any ideas, other people out there who are members of [community profile] harrypotter? :)
