Normally, I would not have made this post, and instead contacted the mod. Unfortunately, jen does not appear to have any public posts on their journal, and has Private Messaging turned off.

Does anyone know what this community was intended to do, or have any ideas for it?

As far as HP stuff on DW goes, there's got to be some kind of void in HP fandom that this community could fill.

As far as I know, there isn't a community dedicated to promoting HP communities, but I'm not sure people would want one. Any ideas, other people out there who are members of harrypotter? :)

That's a good question!

I would not mind the occasional tasteful promotion/making a directory of other HP comms and events out there. People's favorite fics is also an awesome thing. And I hear that many of the cool kids these days are doing something called Pottermore and it might be nice to hear a little about that.

I was just about to comment to this post with: "I have no idea what just happened, but I just got a notification that I'm the new administrator for this community!"

So, I guess that means that this week or so, I should put some time into polling everyone who's in the community and seeing what people want. :D

What about using this post (or a new post, taking what people have already said here too!) as a way to generate ticky-box options for a 'What do you want in this community' poll? Thoughts?

edit - I also dumped a bunch of tags into the profile that I took from hp_fanfiction, where I also co-mod. :)

Ooo, that's a good idea.

It might also be a good idea to locate the Potter-related tags of some prolific bookmarkers on various services and bookmark *those*, because those are apt to have nice fresh fic for as long as they can find good fic in the fandom.

I admit that I have absolutely no idea how the bookmarking services thing works. XD

I never got into fannish bookmarking or heavy personal bookmarking, so I never figured out any of it. Before Delicious broke, I basically had The Face of Terror every time I tried to use that site. Which should give you some idea of my level of competency at bookmarking services. :)

I am totally more than happy to edit bookmarking services tags into the ideas post in general, but I am of no use as to knowing what those tags might be!

Okay. What I'm going to do (have started doing) is collecting... well, it's a bookmark with other bookmarks inside it. I am going to keep an eye on Pinboard and probably some other places for a while, and look at all of the tags that other people are using to bookmark Potter-related stuff, and then bookmark those bookmarks, and basically all you need to know is this is the link that holds everything and you can just visit it and click around and suddenly worlds of delight (and maybe appalled squick) will open to your inquiring gaze: http://pinboard.in/t:fandom:bookmarks:potter/

Anyone with a Pinboard account can add things with the "fandom:bookmarks:potter" tag and it will show up there, and I am hoping that people will catch on to what I'm doing and use that meta-bookmark the same way that I am.

Probably the thing to do is call it "A collection of Harry Potter-related bookmarks" and shove it in the links list or something, because the location's not going to change, and we can just keep adding as people evolve more tags in more places.

Hee, I'm over-committed also, but I do know bookmarking and DW and stuff! I would be fine co-adminning in the might-be-awake-at-3am-if-someone-has-scribbled-on-the-walls & occasionally-can-be-counted-on-to-post-stuff sense, but I do this thing where I am all OO SHINY WOW over a new shiny thing and then three days later I've moved on to the next shiny. :-P

I mostly figured fan-fiction, Harry Potter discussion, I don't really mind people putting out a directory of other HP communities. Or art, etc.

Basically, if it's Harry Potter related I'm fine with it as long as people are reminded to be tactful about cuts and how often they post at once.

Also, I don't think there was a way to do it some months ago, but if the administrator can't be contacted at all (comment, PM, etc.) I think we can report it as a TOS violation and have administrator status transferred to another user, if they can't contact the user as well. I don't know how often they act on that last part if the account isn't deleted, but I think it's important to get the interests and profile of communities edited to help attract users - and multiple communities on the same topic only work if you have a ridiculously large user base.

I'll hopefully found out the answer to that soon-ish, as I've recently petitioned to have a community transfered due to administrator absence (dhr_news, if you're curious).

Yup! I'm not sure how large the HP community is here on DW. I should probably list the communities I do know exist, so people have an idea. Things to do this week! :)
